Additional Products Offered by EquiTrust
EquiTrust offers 11 annuity products, divided into the categories of accumulation annuities and payout annuities.
There is a solid mix of options available, ranging from one-year rate annuities to index-linked annuities.
Accumulation Annuities
EquiTrust’s 10 different accumulation annuities can help you work towards different goals. While each type has its potential benefits and offerings, the accumulation annuities all offer the general benefits that are considered industry standard.
This includes security such as nursing home and terminal illness waivers, along with the ability to withdraw up to 10% of your contract value with no penalty after a year.
EquiTrust’s Accumulation Annuity Categories
- One-year renewable rate
- Multi-year rate
- Index-linked
- Index-linked rate buy-up
- Index-linked with long-term care benefits and wellness program
EquiTrust’s most diverse offerings come with its index-linked annuities, where five products are sold.
Some of these products can offer bonuses to customers. The MarketPower Bonus®, for example, offers access to different indexes along with a 10% premium bonus in the first year.
The MarketTen Bonus® annuity, on the other hand, advertises a 6% bonus on premiums paid in the first five years of the contract.
EquiTrust also sells more simplified products, such as the ChoiceFour® Annuity. This is a one-year renewable rate product paid with a single premium and an annual reset on your interest rate.
Fixed Annuities
On top of its 10 accumulation options, EquiTrust offers one simple fixed annuity as well. This is called the Confidence Income® Annuity.
This annuity is essentially a SPIA, paid with a lump-sum premium and offering a handful of payout options.
It includes a fixed period payout, single life or joint life payout.

About EquiTrust
EquiTrust, which is based in Chicago, is a relatively newer entrant to the annuity market when compared to some legacy providers.
The company was founded in 2003 but has a surprisingly large market presence given its age. It came close to $2 billion in annual direct premiums sold in 2022.
Magic Johnson Enterprises became the controlling shareholder in 2015, and the company played a big role in Johnson becoming the fourth-ever athlete to become a billionaire in 2023.
EquiTrust’s AM Best Financial Strength Rating of B++ can be a concern. This is notably lower than many key competitors.

Credit Ratings
Credit ratings for annuity providers can help determine a company’s financial strength and stability — an indication that it will be around to guarantee payments to you in the future. Different rating companies use different scales.
EquiTrust Credit Ratings
Rating Company | Credit Rating |
AM Best | B++ |
Fitch | Not Rated |
S&P | BBB+ |
It’s also important to look at an issuer’s financial strength history. Ratings that shift drastically each year could indicate the company’s lack of financial stability.
EquiTrust has maintained an “A” financial strength rating from AM Best since 2020.

What Customers Are Saying About EquiTrust
EquiTrust is a harder company to get a read on as far as its overall customer satisfaction. It does not appear in the 2022 or 2023 versions of the J.D. Power Overall Customer Satisfaction Index Ranking for annuity providers.
This does not mean that it doesn’t have strong customer satisfaction, but that it may not have been considered by J.D. Power.
The company’s NAIC Complaint Index Score of 0.96 is also middle of the road and implies there are about as many customer complaints against EquiTrust as would be expected for its size.
Given the priority many annuity customers place on financial strength, the B++ rating from AM Best may be a concern.
One agent that Annuity.org spoke to when researching annuity providers said that they avoid working with providers that have a rating of B++ or lower.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) tracks consumer complaints that each state’s insurance commission recieves each year. These are used to compile a company’s NAIC Complaint Index.NAIC Complaint IndexDetermined by dividing the company’s share of complaints in the U.S. market by the company’s share of premiums in the U.S. market. The National Complaint Index is always 1.00, so a score of 2.00, for example, is twice as high as expected in the market.
NAIC Complaint Index for EquiTrust
All Policy Types | 0.05 |
Individual Annuities Only | 0.96 |
These number suggest that EquiTrust received an average number of complaints from annuity customers but far fewer complaints overall than the industry average.
EquiTrust Pros & Cons
One of the pros to opting for EquiTrust is that it offers a solid diversity of options, especially when it comes to accumulation products.
Whether you are looking for a simple set rate, something linked to an index or a more complex product, EquiTrust will likely have something to fit your needs.
The company also offers a good amount of information about its annuities online. You can easily compare products and learn more about the specific features of each annuity.
As far as cons, one major drawback is the company’s AM Best Financial Strength Rating. It should be noted that B++ is not a bad or alarming rating, but it is below many of EquiTrust’s competitors in the annuity space. This could be something that may off-put customers who care about financial strength and stability.

Provider Rating Methodology
Annuity.org created a fact-based methodology to analyze the strength, security and reach of different annuity providers. We assessed companies based on their availability, the number of direct premiums sold, their AM Best Financial Strength Rating and their NAIC Complaint Index score.
Providers received a rating on a five-star scale for each of these categories, with the complaint index and financial strength ratings weighed as the heaviest variables. Then, using a weighted average, each company was assigned an overall star rating.
