Marguerita-Cheng-4-How much income will I need in retirement
Video Transcript
So many times people ask me how should I think about how much retirement income I need And that answer is very personal. It depends on each individual's unique personal and financial circumstances. A good way to think about this is first look at your core or essential expenses.
I don't say fixed because sometimes they're not fixed. Your electric bill or gas certainly isn't gonna be fixed, but core essential. Then you want to look at your lifestyle or variable. Notice I didn't say discretionary because what is discretionary for one person may be essential for someone else.
So we basically have our core and essential expenses and then our variable and lifestyle expenses. So you want to try to make sure that you can match your sustainable predictable source of income with those core expenses. And one way in which you can maximize that is make sure that you understand your Social Security benefit at different ages. Age sixty two, which is a reduced benefit, but it is a benefit, at full retirement age, and if appropriate, then at age seventy.
So I think it's important to look at your expenses and then know what is available to you. One way to maximize your retirement income is to see it first starts with Social Security because Social Security is the foundation of retirement security, and you can see what your benefit would be at age sixty two, which is a reduced benefit, and then what your benefit is at full retirement age. If it's not appropriate based on your personal or financial circumstances to wait till age seventy, the best way to maximize is to wait until full retirement age.
