Newer assets like cryptocurrencies are yet to prove themselves competitive to stocks. Traditionally, retirement investors would invest in things such as bonds, perhaps annuities, generating income.

However, ever since the great financial recession of two thousand and eight, we've been in a persistently low rate environment. And those investors aren't able to generate as much income. So many of them have been pushed into stocks where they can generate dividend income and participate in the growth potential of those companies, thereby capitalizing on some price appreciation.
