People that might want to consider a variable annuity are people that are still working that might have 15, 20, 25 years to retirement and can absorb more risk than somebody that is actually closer to or in retirement. They can offer a higher potential for return, which is great. But if you consider the sequence of returns and as we get closer towards retirement age, we just can't absorb those losses in a way that we're able to in our younger years and still reach our goals.
