Juliette Fairley - How did you become a personal finance expert?
Video Transcript
I became a personal finance expert in a very strange way.
It chose me. So I went to Columbia Journalism School and, I went into debt. And back then it cost twenty thousand dollars to go to Columbia Journalism School, which was a lot of money for me at, I think I was twenty one, twenty two years old.
And, I couldn't really afford it.
But I did it and I took on the debt. And it was a nightmare paying it off. My first job out of Columbia Journalism School was to work at a magazine as a personal finance expert. I thought, gosh, I know nothing about personal finance.
What am I going to do? Well, I was put in that position in order to learn how to manage my finances. And I started learning how to invest and how to pay off your debt and how to manage your debt and how manage your money. Like, it was a quick lesson in financial literacy.
So I ended up paying off all that debt because I got a very well paying job with, Steve Forbes, who, as you know, came from a very wealthy family and launched a magazine.
So I started working for that company and I made a lot of money and I was able to pay off my debt. The more that I was in this profession of personal finance and writing about personal finance, because in writing a story I also have to research the information. So I started implementing some of these tips for myself.
And I began to realize just for myself how important financial literacy was.
